There was only one file left on Kent Hughes' desk before he took his summer vacation, and it was the contract extension for Jesse Ylonen.

Now, it's a done deal. The Canadiens have just announced the signing of the Finnish player.

It's a one-year, two-way contract. Kent Hughes is keeping options open for Laval, given the number of forwards in the Canadiens' roster.

This is likely the reason why it's just a one-year contract and why it took so long to settle. Ylonen clearly wanted an NHL-only contract, and we can understand that.

Full announcement from the Canadiens:

BROSSARD - Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Monday that the team has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with forward Jesse Ylönen.

The Scottsdale, AZ native played 37 games with the Canadiens last season, scoring six goals and adding 10 assists (three career highs in the NHL). Ylönen also scored a power play goal and a game-winning goal. In 52 career NHL games, the 23-year-old forward has registered eight goals and 13 helpers.

Ylönen started the 2022-23 season with the Laval Rocket in the AHL, where he recorded 32 points (11 goals, 21 assists) in 39 games. Since making his AHL debut in 2020-21, he has tallied 34 goals and 51 assists in 120 games with Laval.

Ylönen was selected in the second round (35th overall) in 2018 by the Canadiens.
