As Montreal Canadiens officials prepare for the draft and the opening day of the free agent market, another big deal continues to draw attention.
Unfortunately, we won't have our answer right away, but Kent Hughes mentioned that he will name a new captain before the start of the next season.
In a recent interview with 91.9 Sports, Montreal Canadiens VP of Communications Chantal Machabée had this to say:
"That, I think it's clear that it won't happen right away. It won't be this week, I don't think, at least. It's the coaching staff that's going to be involved in that discussion there and they're going to analyze that. We will have the majority of the coaches during the week of the draft, so the first week of July. Will the discussions take place then? We'll see. I think the draft is a priority right now." - Chantal Machabée
And she adds this, when asked if the famous unveiling could take place at the team's golf tournament:
"Probably! It could be that. It could very well be. I would see that, there, probably. I know that right now, they're focused on transactions and the draft." - Chantal Machabée
So it will be something to watch at that time, but in the meantime, there are several theories that are surfacing, including a new one that is causing a lot of reactions.
Popular observer Maxim Guérin raises an intriguing possibility. What if the CH decided to name a "temporary" captain, like Joel Edmundson or Brendan Gallagher, to wait 3-4 more years, before naming... Kaiden Guhle?
It's a possibility that has already been mentioned many times, notably by Kent Hughes himself (that of naming a Joel Edmundson or a Brendan Gallagher) while waiting to eventually give the "C" to a young player, but here we were talking about Nick Suzuki.
And if, in the end, the Habs decide to use this plan, but to eventually name Kaiden Guhle (who looks a lot like Shea Weber, according to many)
Do you like the idea? Or do you think the real next captain of this organization is Nick Suzuki and nobody else?
This is an interesting debate!
