A big turnaround in the Montreal Canadiens' net today?

Since yesterday afternoon, many Montreal Canadiens fans and analysts have been discussing the possibility of Kent Hughes claiming goaltender Cal Petersen, who was placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Kings.

We'll have the answer at 2pm today, and the CH holds the 14th right to speak.

Here is the scenario that is most discussed at the moment. Could Kent Hughes decide to 1) claim Petersen, who was a true rising star in the NHL in the last few years, and 2) try to trade Jake Allen, who still has solid value on the trade market.

Do you like the idea?

Allen, 32, has a 6-8-0 record this season, a 3.57 GAA, and a 0.890% efficiency rate.

Could it be a good strategy to trade him for a good draft pick(s) and continue the season with a Montembeault-Petersen duo?

Currently, many experts believe that the goalie situation is a hot potato for the CH:

Taking a chance on Petersen, under the current circumstances, could make absolute sense for the Montreal Canadiens, who don't want to win "at all costs" this year.

The risk is low, in the sense that you still have Montembeault, and the gamble could pay off big time if Petersen ever finds his feet and becomes a star goalie.

Plus, if General Manager Hughes manages to acquire a good pick (or picks), in exchange for Jake Allen, it makes absolute sense and is interesting for the future of the organization.

Would you believe it? Would you do it?

One thing is for sure, the excitement is palpable among fans of the various NHL teams in search of a goalie.

Less than two years ago, Petersen was identified as a future NHL all-star goalie and was an untouchable for the Kings. In fact, he was the one who chased Jack Campbell out of Los Angeles.

Goalies like Robin Lehner once suggested that he was a top five goaltender in the world (Petersen) and he seemed to be on the same trajectory as a Jake Oettinger or an Ilya Sorokin.

Petersen started his career with two amazing rookie seasons (0.924 and 0.922% efficiency in 2020 behind bad teams). Since then, things have gotten tough for Petersen and he seems to have completely lost his confidence.

He has a 5-3-2 record this season with the Kings and a 3.75 goals-against average.

Should Kent Hughes give him a fresh start, claim him, and see if he can become the star goalie he was meant to be?

Petersen was the best goalie in the NCAA from 2015-2017 (even being captain of his team). We're talking about a very athletic goalie with immense potential.

Claiming Petersen and trading Jake Allen at a high price, are we doing it?

We'll have the answer at 2pm.
