Nearly three years after playing his last game in a Bruins uniform, retired defenseman Zdeno Chara will return to Boston in April
The former Bruins captain announced via his Instagram account that he will be running in the Boston Marathon on April 17.
It will also be a first marathon experience for the six foot nine inch athlete.
"I'm so happy to announce that I'm running my very first marathon, and what better first marathon than the Boston Marathon on April 17! In addition, I am running to support the Thomas E. Smith Foundation and the Hoyt Foundation. Dick and Rick Hoyt have had an incredible impact on millions of people around the world and personally helped motivate us to our 2011 Stanley Cup Championship. The Hoyt Foundation has an incredible legacy with the B.A.A. and this iconic marathon. Tom Smith is one of the most resilient and inspiring stories. With his passion and dedication, his foundation continually helps those affected and living with paralysis. If you would like to make a donation to the Hoyt Foundation and the Thomas E. Smith Foundation, please click on the donation link in my bio. Looking forward to seeing you on the course, come cheer us on!"
As you can see, Chara seems pretty proud to have the chance to participate in this prestigious event, in addition to supporting the Thomas E.Smith Foundation and the Hoyt Foundation.
After all, it's a great way for the man who played 14 seasons with the Bruins to give back to the city of Boston.
In total, Chara played in 1,023 regular season games with the Bruins, recording 481 points (148 goals), as well as 150 playoff games, including a Stanley Cup victory in 2011.
