Many experts are suggesting that a trade involving Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson could be on the horizon.

Several believe that due to the acquisition of Noah Dobson, via a trade completed with the New York Islanders last month, Matheson now becomes "the odd man out."
I don't necessarily agree with that, and I believe the trade proposals involving Mike Matheson being floated by some are largely premature.

A trade involving Mike Matheson would put the Canadiens organization in trouble

That's the position of Charles-Alexis Brisebois (If Mike Matheson is traded, the Rocket and the Canadiens would suffer), and he makes some strong points.
There are several reasons why the Habs should not trade Matheson, unless it brings a solid return (like a second-line center).
First, Matheson loves playing for the Montreal Canadiens, and it's clear he'd be willing to leave money on the table to stay.
Second, even if he does lose some power-play minutes, he'll remain an incredible luxury depth defenseman.
To win a playoff round, you need loads of defensive depth.
Third, even though we really hope it doesn't happen, if Lane Hutson or Noah Dobson were to get injured, the Canadiens would be in serious trouble without Mike Matheson.. big trouble!
We're talking about a defenseman who, over the past three seasons, has averaged:
25:05 minutes per game in 2024-25
25:33 minutes per game in 2023-24
24:27 minutes per game in 2022-23
So, even though Noah Dobson is now in town, Matheson will absolutely still be useful.
And if he plays 20 solid minutes a night instead of 25-26, well, that's even better than overusing him again.
