As reported by my colleague Cédrick Gervais, from Marqueur, a scoop that seemed innocuous has just come out, involving the New Jersey Devils, but it's important to know because it will have a direct impact on the Montreal Canadiens.

Kent Hughes can probably already forget about the 2nd round pick

As you know, in the transaction that sent Jake Allen to the Devils at the trade deadline, the CH acquired a 3rd round pick, but which can become a 2nd round pick if Allen plays 40 games in New Jersey next season and if they make the playoffs.
However, Pierre LeBrun has just about dashed our hopes of seeing this 3rd round pick turn into a 2nd round pick.
Their GM, Tom Fitzgerald, is going to acquire a true number one goalie this summer, like a Linus Ullmark, a Juuse Saros, or a Jacob Markstrom. Anyway, he's going to try very hard!
"The Devils still intend to go after a true number one goalie this summer, and that includes resuming negotiations with the Calgary Flames about Jacob Markstrom, but also the situation of the Nashville Predators' goalie, Juuse Saros, as well as other goalies across the league.

The idea is to try to recruit an excellent goalie and have Allen to create a 1A-1B situation. That's why it was crucial for Montreal to retain 50% of Allen's salary, making it a good deal with a salary of $1.925 million until next season. That's also the reason why New Jersey had to trade Vitek Vanecek and his salary of $3.4 million for next season." - Pierre LeBrun

So, in short, they will pay $1.925 million for their 1B goalie (who will be Allen) and they are likely to pay about $6 million for their 1A goalie.
Needless to say, with a Jacob Markstrom or a Juuse Saros in the picture, forget about seeing Allen play 40 games next season.
A third-round pick, however, is still a pretty good return for Jake Allen, even if we had hoped for the 2nd choice!
A file to follow! It changes the game!
