A transaction between the Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues was indeed blocked.
By whom? None other than Brett Hull himself!
This revelation comes from a recent episode of the podcast "Missin Curfew." Former player Kelly Chase shared this incredible story.
Brett Hull blocked a trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the St. Louis Blues
Here is the excerpt in question.
"Kelly Chase tells an incredible story about the time Brett Hull prevented the St. Louis Blues from trading him to the Montreal Canadiens."
- Missin Curfew
In short, Chase explains that, on an NHL trade deadline day several years ago, Brett Hull invited him to play golf.
Chase accepted the invitation, but he wasn't really focused on golf because he was genuinely afraid of being traded.
Finally, what was bound to happen, happened.
Halfway through the course, Kelly Chase received a message indicating he needed to call the Blues.
He had just been traded to the Montreal Canadiens.
When he told Brett Hull the news on the golf course, Hull responded:
"Nonsense! You're not traded, get back in the cart so we can finish our round! You don't need to go to the office, you're not traded!"
Chase still went to the Blues' office, where he was greeted by Prof Caron, only to be told:
"Oh, you're lucky, I just talked to your friend, and he said if you go to Montreal, he's going with you! And we can't accept that!
You're lucky because I'm friends with Serge Savard, and we canceled the trade. You're lucky because your friend saved you, as we can't let him go!" - Kelly Chase
I wonder if any player could wield such power today.
It's quite an anecdote, indeed!
