In recent weeks, there has been a great deal of uncertainty surrounding the future of Auston Matthews in Toronto, as he will become a free agent at the end of the next season. However, in his podcast 32 Thoughts Elliotte Friedman revealed major news about the forward's future.
Indeed, according to the information he obtained, the new general manager of the Leafs, Brad Treliving, and Auston Matthews' team are currently negotiating the terms of an 8-season contract to keep him with the organization long-term.
It would not be surprising to see the forward become the highest paid player in the NHL, surpassing the $12.6 million awarded to Nathan MacKinnon. Some even speculate that Auston Matthews could put his signature on an 8-year contract worth $110 million ($13.5 million annually).
