The question was asked to the excellent Marc Dumont, of Montreal Hockey Now, who is also a former employee of the CH organization.
He mentioned that the last time he had information, negotiations were not moving very fast. However, that doesn't mean there's animosity or that things have gotten nasty between Caufield and the CH.
It simply means that both parties are taking their time and do not want to fold too easily. After all, Caufield is aware that this is likely the most important contract of his young career.
And a team like the Canadiens, which has been starved of offensive talent for about 30 years, can't afford to lose a player of Caufield's caliber.
He adds that he wouldn't be surprised if "most NHL teams are not at least discussing a possible offer sheet to Caufield."
And especially the Philadelphia Flyers.
This will therefore be a file to absolutely follow, but yes, it's possible that a team decides to submit an offer sheet to Cole Caufield if it continues to take time.
Reminder of the compensations:
$6,435,187 to $8,580,250: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks
$8,580,251 to $10,725,314: two 1st round picks, 2nd and 3rd round picks
Over $10,725,314: four 1st round picks.
