The two Leafs stars once again failed to win a Game 7, and once again, both were practically invisible last night.
The captain had a lot to say about it.
That said, while Matthews is expected back with the Leafs next season, the same can't be said for Marner.
On that topic, Toronto reporters showed no mercy toward Mitch Marner after the game, pressing him repeatedly about the decision he faces come July 1.
Where will he sign? Will he return to the Toronto Maple Leafs?

And sure enough, here are a few of Marner's comments from last night:
"And with his contract expiring, [Marner] may well have said goodbye to his hometown team (he was born in Markham), in the eyes of many observers."

And the man himself said this:
"[It meant] everything to me.
They may have taken a chance on a young guy from Toronto like me and I'll always be grateful I got to wear the Maple Leafs jersey-one worn by some legendary athletes."
"I have no thoughts right now.
I'm devastated by what happened.
I've loved this team the whole time," he also said.

Yes, he's speaking in the past tense. And yes, unsurprisingly, he sounds like a player who won't be re-signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Leafs fans let Marner and the team hear it last night, and after that abysmal performance, who could blame them?
So, as far as his next team is concerned, it's safe to cross the Toronto Maple Leafs off the list, a massive development for a team like the Montreal Canadiens, who could now realistically pursue the 100-point winger.
So, would you sign Mitch Marner if you were in Kent Hughes' and the Montreal Canadiens' shoes?
