The Mitch Marner situation may be headed for a completely unexpected twist.
According to multiple sources, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers could very well finalize a trade involving the Leafs' star forward.
"There are serious rumors that the Florida Panthers could be preparing an offer for Marner.
We're hearing that Toronto has opened the door to a sign-and-trade scenario, where they would sign Marner to the max (eight years) before trading him in order to recoup some value," wrote Robinson this week.

That would mean they've changed their mind on the matter!
This strategy could be beneficial for Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving, as it would prevent losing his star forward for nothing.
A surprise trade involving Mitch Marner before July 1?
Mitch Marner is coming off a 102-point season, and it's widely expected that he won't return to Toronto next year.
Watching him leave the Queen City without the Leafs getting anything in return would be a tough blow for the organization.
The idea of Marner landing in Florida makes sense - but he's going to be expensive for the Panthers.
Most experts agree that the 28-year-old will sign a deal worth at least $12 million per season, and at that price, Panthers GM Bill Zito will have some big decisions to make about the future of the team.
Players like
Sam Bennett,
Brad Marchand, and
Aaron Ekblad are all set to become unrestricted free agents, and if Mitch Marner joins the Panthers, there won't be enough money to keep all those names under the Florida sun.
Could this also be an opportunity for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, who have the cap space to afford him?
