Insider reveals Maple Leafs superstar may be on his way out of Toronto
Auston Matthews holds the Maple Leafs in the palm of his hand. After proving that he's a superstar in the NHL, he could become the highest-paid player in the league.
If they want to keep him, they'll have no choice but to grant his wishes.
If negotiations aren't happening soon, the worst could happen in Toronto. Why? Because on July 1st, Matthews's no-move clause will kick in, and he will be able to basically choose where he plays.
Back when Dubas was in charge, Elliotte Friedman reported:
"I think the Maple Leafs know if they're going to do that he's probably going to be the highest-paid player in the league and I think they're willing to do it".
Now, multiple trade rumors are surrounding him. If the Leafs don't want to take the chance of seeing him walking away, the next best option would be to trade him. Will the new GM be able to make this tough decision?
Friedman continued:
"They're looking for a GM with some bite, a GM who won't be afraid to make decisions. There are some big decisions to make that they have coming up, including that it doesn't appear likely that Matthews will sign by July 1st. It's not their only concern but it is one of the biggest things that they'll have to navigate."
