The assistants of the excellent
Patrick Roy will be different next season.
Two coaching departures from the Islanders, and new assistants for Patrick Roy
As Roy begins his first full season behind the Islanders' bench, after surprising everyone and leading them to the playoffs last spring, he will now have to adapt to some changes.
Notably, there is a big surprise and a significant loss for the Islanders.
"Islanders coaching staff:
Arrivals: Albelin, Naumovs
OUT: Houda, Korn
Remaining: Roy, MacLean, Desrosiers, Greco
Promoted: Terreri"
For those unfamiliar, "Korn" refers to Mitch Korn.
Mitch Korn is an unsung legend in the National Hockey League and is regarded as a true genius of goaltending, possibly the best goaltending coach in the world (and among the best in history).
He managed to turn Thomas Greiss into a dominant NHL goaltender (0.927 save percentage), completely revived
Robin Lehner's career (0.930 save percentage), and made Lehner a two-time trophy winner, including the Jennings Trophy.
In short, many goaltenders have suddenly become very dominant after working with Mitch Korn.
It's no coincidence that the New York Islanders have always had good goaltenders with solid stats. The mastermind behind these repeated successes is Mitch Korn.
He is a true reference in the NHL, and his assistants often find good jobs in the league, simply because they've been to the Mitch Korn school (similar to Kyle Shanahan, Bill Belichick, or Sean McVay in the NFL).
So yes, Mitch Korn's departure is a huge loss for Patrick Roy and the New York Islanders, but I'm sure the former number 33 will find a way to overcome this major loss.
However, don't be surprised if the Islanders' goaltenders regress a bit this season.
