The Montreal Canadiens have already acquired a better player than Martin Necas
If we look at the numbers, indeed, Kent Hughes and the Canadiens have acquired a better player than Martin Necas in the trade with the Colorado Avalanche.
There has been a lot of talk about the inaction of Montreal's GM this summer and the fact that he may not have been able to acquire another top 6 forward (like Martin Necas, whose name circulated widely in rumors earlier this summer), but perhaps he already has someone better.
With Kirby Dach returning to full health, a certain Alex Newhook could truly take off on the wing of the Montreal Canadiens' second line.

It's easy to look at the players we could acquire via trade, but let's take a look at those we already have.
«On June 27, 2023, the Canadiens acquired Alex Newhook in exchange for their 31st and 37th overall picks, which became Mikhail Gulyayev and Ethan Gauthier, plus defenseman Gianni Fairbrother.» We looked at the statistics and were pleasantly surprised to find that, indeed, Alex Newhook seems to be a better hockey player than Martin Necas.
Martin Necas, 5 years after his draft year, has tallied 14 goals and 26 assists, averaging 0.51 points per game in 78 games.
Alex Newhook, 5 years after his draft year, has tallied 15 goals and 19 assists, averaging 0.62 points per game in 55 games.
That's solid!
You can see their full statistical profiles here.
So, honestly, with just the acquisitions of Michael Hage and Ivan Demidov in the draft, I believe Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens can say mission accomplished for this summer!
And let's not forget the contracts given to Juraj Slafkovsky, Kaiden Guhle, and Arber Xhekaj, which are also great moves by the organization this summer of 2024.
