Samuel Montembeault proved beyond any doubt that he is the ultimate teammate with a reaction that commands respect toward Jakub Dobes.
We often talk about how ruthless internal competition is in the NHL. It’s even more true in net.
There’s only one crease and two guys who want to own it.
Jakub Dobes is going through an incredible stretch right now. The Czech goaltender drafted in the 5th round (2020) is seriously threatening the established hierarchy.
He’s stealing important starts.
Most veterans would be sulking in this situation, like we’ve seen with some NHL goalies this season.
Pouting in their corner while waiting for their turn.
Not Samuel Montembeault.
The postgame footage tells a story of leadership from the Quebecer.
Montembeault was patiently waiting at the locker room door. He wanted to be the first to greet Jakub Dobes.

Habs fans know how to recognize a true professional, and moments like this only deepen the love for this player.
He wasn’t there by accident.
He went out of his way specifically to welcome the young goaltender as he came off the ice.
He offered him sincere congratulations.
Only after that exchange did he head back to his own stall.
It’s easy to be a good leader when everything is going well and you’re playing 60 games a year.
It’s much harder when a young wolf is pushing you toward the bench.
Montembeault puts the team ahead of his ego.
That culture of brotherhood is worth more than any win in the standings for Martin St-Louis.

We’ve seen a similar gesture from Dobes toward Montembeault in the past, notably during the game against the Senators, which shows the mutual respect and appreciation between the two goaltenders.
