One Big Condition Could Impact the Potential Trade Involving David Savard
Last year, at the trade deadline, many thought Kent Hughes would trade his veteran David Savard.
A few months later, as the team faces a challenging start to the season, there seems to be a disagreement among fans and media about the future of the Quebecer. While many still believe he should be traded, others think Kent Hughes might keep him.
One of those is Sportsnet journalist Eric Engels. He recently revealed that he would propose a contract extension for Savard.
David Savard won't be traded, as long as it doesn't block the development of certain young players, especially when it comes to distributing ice time.
However, there would be a condition: the veteran would need to accept a limited role on the ice. Engels wants to see Arber Xhekaj, Justin Barron, and Lane Hutson, among others, take the lead.
«Young defensemen must be put in those positions.»
Eric Engels
This perspective, as mentioned earlier, is not shared by everyone. Many still want Kent Hughes to take advantage of the veteran's current value.
On this topic, Dennis Bernstein mentioned on a podcast for The Fourth Period site that Montreal could very well receive a first-round pick in exchange for Savard's services.
«If Kent Hughes waits for the right moment, he should receive a first-round pick. Some teams believe that a veteran like David Savard is the last piece they need to build a Cup-contending team.
A very reliable right-handed defenseman who blocks shots and plays physically.»
Dennis Bernstein
At $3.5 million for this season (his cost will decrease over time), Savard is certainly of interest to several teams. It remains to be seen whether the lack of progression in the Canadiens' defensive core will push Kent Hughes to extend his veteran defenseman for a few more years.
The GM still has time to decide, but the trade deadline will arrive quickly
