As the Montreal Canadiens are currently heading to Boston in preparation for the game against the Bruins, Samuel Montembeault already has his answer.
Martin St-Louis hurried to name Jacob Fowler as the starting goaltender for Tuesday night's game.
Seeing a coach name his starting goalie so quickly, right after a game and well before the next one, is extremely rare, and it sends a pretty clear message.
Jacob Fowler will be in net Tuesday night in Boston
A confirmation that turns this game against the Bruins into a very special moment.
Martin St-Louis confirmed it after last night's game.
Fowler will get another start, a few days after his first shutout in the NHL. The young goaltender will therefore continue his adventure in an environment that is familiar to him.
Before arriving with the Montreal Canadiens, Fowler wore the colors of Boston College in the NCAA from 2023 to 2025.
He played in that environment, in front of those fans, on those rinks. This time, he will face the Bruins in the NHL, wearing the CH jersey, in an arena where intensity is never lacking.
This start also comes in a particular context in the Montreal crease.
Samuel Montembeault is not yet with the team, and Jakub Dobes also responded when called upon. Last night's loss is certainly not his fault alone.
The message from Martin St-Louis is clear: he is not in a hurry to replace Fowler with Samuel Montembeault, although the Canadiens expect Montembeault to rejoin the team after Christmas.
