As the Montreal Canadiens' 2024 training camp is underway, the battle for certain roster spots is fierce.
On this topic, the excellent journalist Martin Leclerc points out a significant change in the Habs' locker room compared to recent years.
In the past, many veterans would do everything they could to help young players develop. But this season, as some veterans are visibly afraid of losing their spots, the situation seems quite different.

Young players like Oliver Kapanen, Emil Heineman, and Owen Beck are specifically trying to push some veterans out of their spots. There is one exception, however.
«The only young player who's getting love regardless is Lane Hutson. The veterans aren't oblivious, either; they know that the small lefty has a nearly guaranteed spot and can genuinely help the team win this season.»

By the way, we're not saying that this is unusual or a very bad sign, but it is still a noteworthy change in tone.
A player like Christian Dvorak, who isn't the most vocal to begin with, is starting to realize that he could actually be replaced by a young player if he doesn't step up his game.
Intense internal competition is always good for an organization, but it comes with certain behavioral changes that are quite understandable.
There seems to be less love from veterans toward the rookies this season in Montreal, and it shows that the rookies are genuinely gaining credibility.
