Several people see Jacob Fowler as the next great goaltender in the Montreal Canadiens organization.
That's saying something...
Speaking of the former No. 31 of the Habs, Fowler recently stated that he would never take his number when he's with the big club.
The 20-year-old American revealed this on the Sans Restriction podcast with Kevin Raphaël.
"Like, what number am I gonna wear? Like, you look up any number. They're all up there. I've worn, in my career, I've worn 29 for USA. Um, I think I even wore 33 a couple times. I was like, you're not gonna wear any of that.
Not gonna wear 31, even though it's not formally retired yet... You don't wanna be that guy. You're going nowhere near it!
- Jacob Fowler
Choosing a number isn't easy in Montreal, and Jacob Fowler is already announcing that he won't take 31 when he plays with the Canadiens
By his own admission, Fowler has been thinking about the number he'll wear in the organization ever since he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens.
In his career, he has worn numbers 1 and 29, but they are currently unavailable, as they hang in the rafters of the Bell Centre for Jacques Plante and Ken Dryden.
He has even played with Patrick Roy's 33 before.
As mentioned earlier, Fowler absolutely does not want to be the one bold enough to wear
Carey Price's 31.
The options are becoming increasingly limited.
At the last training camp, the organization assigned him number 32.
The rookie seems happy with this number.
Even if it's not the main reason for his choice, he likes the fact that it was worn by
Jonathan Quick, an American goalie like him.
It will be interesting to see whether the Habs call on Fowler as early as this season to test him a bit, or whether the organization will remain patient with the young man.
