Good News for Montreal Canadiens Fans Thanks to the Detroit Red Wings
What makes life difficult for a team trying to climb the standings is undoubtedly the NHL schedule. The numerous intra-division games, along with the possibility of a game going from 2 to 3 points if it goes to overtime, make Cinderella stories almost impossible.
Despite this, Martin St-Louis' squad has managed not once, but twice this season to erase a significant point deficit in the standings and get back into the mix.
The task, however, has been tough because all of the team's competitors kept winning their games, often adding overtime victories against their rivals.
For a rare time, the league schedule worked in favor of the Canadiens, as they moved up in the standings without even playing.
The Ottawa Senators help the Canadiens but pull away from them at the same time
After an impressive five-game winning streak following the Four Nations Faceoff, the Montreal Canadiens suffered losses in their first two games of their Western road trip.
Despite that, and without even playing on Monday night, the Canadiens jumped ahead of the Detroit Red Wings in the Eastern Conference standings.
That's good news! The Montreal Canadiens move up a spot in the overall standings!
This happened thanks to the Red Wings' loss to the Ottawa Senators.
As a result, Detroit didn't collect any points and remained tied with Montreal in that regard.
However, their extra game played benefits the Canadiens, who now have a game in hand on their rivals.
The flip side of this Sens victory is that they are now five points ahead of the Canadiens, slowly pulling away from their competitors.
For the Canadiens to get back into the race, they'll need a losing streak from the Sens (and the Columbus Blue Jackets) combined with a winning streak of their own.
