Forgotten Canadiens Prospect Sends a Strong Message to Kent Hughes and the Habs Today
A few days ago, Vinzenz Rohrer put himself on the map by beautifully beating veteran goalie Marc-André Fleury.
In a game against Canada, where Rohrer's team was heavily underestimated, he managed to stand out in a big way.
He was the one who gave Austria the lead when he skillfully beat the veteran Quebec netminder.
Vinzenz Rohrer continues to impress with Austria at the IIHF World Championship
The Montreal Canadiens' 2022 third-round pick (75th overall) closed out the preliminary round of the IIHF World Championship in strong fashion with Team Austria.
In their 6-1 win over Latvia, Rohrer scored two goals, including one into an empty net.
The 20-year-old prospect finished the first phase of the tournament with four goals and two assists, totaling six points in seven games.
This is also the first time since 1994 that Austria has reached the playoff round of the tournament, and it's largely thanks to a Canadiens prospect!
A contract situation similar to Oliver Kapanen's this season for Vinzenz Rohrer
Given the impressive performances of the young forward, many would surely love to see him arrive in North America as soon as next season.
However, it won't be easy, as Rohrer is under contract with the ZSC Lions in the Swiss league for one more year.
Just like Oliver Kapanen this season, who was under contract with Timra IK in the SHL, if Rohrer signs with the Canadiens, he would be required to play in Montreal. If he were sent down to Laval, he would be returned to Zurich due to the European assignment clause.
Still, despite this agreement, the Austrian forward clearly plans to make the jump to North America in the coming years.
"I'll have to think about it over the summer.
I'm not trying to mislead you-I truly don't know which way it will go."
"It will depend on many factors, my level of play, what happens in Montreal, in Laval.
But my goal remains to come to North America one day."
- Vinzenz Rohrer
One thing's for sure, through both this statement and his performances, Rohrer is sending a huge message to Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens right now!
This will be a storyline to watch, and definitely a name for Canadiens fans to remember.
