Corey Perry Makes Big Statement on Nick Suzuki and Sends a Clear Message to the Hockey World
The role of captain in Montreal is immense, as Nick Suzuki and Shea Weber know very well.
Whoever wears that letter on their jersey has very big shoes to fill when you consider the club's history.
The team's recent struggles, combined with a tougher start to the season, have led many to doubt number 14.
Many believe his role is starting to weigh heavily on him and that his performance is taking a hit.
Nick recently admitted to Jean-François Chaumont that, at times, the letter is hard to bear.
NHL - Suzuki: A Captain in Search of Himself
«I think, yes, it's becoming more difficult. I'm trying to manage. It's hard to focus on your game. I have a big voice in the locker room. I try to say and do the right things, but I don't feel like I'm playing as well as usual.
When things are going well, it's easier to take on this role. I'm just trying to stay positive and support the guys. We're a big family.» - Nick Suzuki
Suzuki, however, has plenty of support, both on the Canadiens and in the NHL. One of those who has never doubted Suzuki is Corey Perry.
A Big Statement from Corey Perry About His Former Team
Ahead of the Oilers' matchup at the Bell Centre Monday night, Perry addressed the critics of the current captain, stating that number 14 is made for this role.
Corey Perry on Nick Suzuki:
«Believe me, he's tailor-made for the role of captain. There's no other player I would have chosen in his place.»
In addition to this statement about Nick Suzuki, Corey Perry mentioned that he is feeling great and wants to keep playing hockey for another five years!
He's not done playing, and we're not done hearing about him. We love it.
It's clear Suzuki is well supported when he needs it. A few days ago, during his visit to the Bell Centre for his induction into the Canadiens' Ring of Honor, Shea Weber opened up about his successor. He even admitted that he offered Suzuki his unconditional support.
«I spoke to him in Toronto, and last night [Friday] we talked during dinner, and I was very clear with him, telling him not to be afraid to call me.»
«There's no pressure, but I'm here to listen if he needs to talk, even if he just wants to get something off his chest for 30 minutes.»
- Shea Weber
The newly-inducted Hockey Hall of Famer also mentioned during a recent dinner with Suzuki that the guys respect him a lot. He was, in fact, Weber's choice when Kent Hughes asked him about his successor.
Experience is something you learn, often on the fly and in difficult situations. The Canadiens are right in the thick of it, and Suzuki will undoubtedly find a way to emerge stronger from all of this!
