Every hockey fan knows who has worn the number 99 in the NHL. That number has become iconic and now no one in the league can wear it.
Many think they know the story behind the choice of this number. Now you can confirm your version with the real one.
In the latest episode of the Spittin' Chiclets podcast, Gretzky tells the true story of how he adopted his now iconic number. The story begins, as we all probably know, with Gordie Howe. Gretzky was a huge Howe fan and wore Howe's number 9 throughout his minor hockey.
When Gretzky was drafted by the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds in the OHL, he wore the number 19, which was given to him by the team. After starting the season with 21 points in only six games, Gretzky had sense and talked to his coach about changing his number. The rest is history.
