Last year, everything smiled at Cole Caufield. The Habs' prospect played a whole season with the University of Wisconsin Badgers amassing an impressive total of 52 points in 31 games. He also won gold at the World Junior Championship as well as the Hobey Baker trophy, awarded to the top NCAA player in the US.
Coming into the pros, Caufield continued to do well as he scored three goals in two games with the Rocket. Then it was time to make the big jump to the NHL.
This season, however, the opposite is true for Caufield, which is struggling enormously. It's very difficult for the Habs' number 22 who has only one goal in 29 games.
According to Martin Lemay, the Canadiens are burning Cole Caufield since his place would be with the Rocket right now. Of course, the injuries and COVID-19 did not help the Habs who had to call back an unsually big number of players since the start of the season to fill in the holes in his lineup.
The number 22 must go refine his game in the AHL. Errors have much less impact at this level and he has to go and learn at this level just like an apprentice in any other job. That is perfectly normal! Only exceptional players like Crosby and McDavid can skip this stage, which is considered essential for the majority of players who play in the NHL.
The Canadiens must do something quickly in the case of Caufield, because otherwise, it will be another first round pick that will disappoint many supporters. He is still young, it is still possible to save him!
