In the last few hours, the Tampa Bay Lightning organization announced that they have signed defenseman Philippe Myers to a one-year contract extension.

A deal worth $ 1.4 million, which will begin in the 2023-2024 season, since he still has one year left on his contract of $ 2.55 million.
Why is this a surprise signing, which makes many people lie?
Because Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois acquired Myers in early July, and all the experts thought it was a clever move to, once again, beat the NHL salary cap.
First, let's recall the transaction:
"We acquired defenseman Philippe Myers and forward Grant Mismash from Nashville in exchange for Ryan McDonagh."

- Tampa Bay Lightning

Explanation:
"As for the defenseman Tampa received, Philippe Myers, he may well be acquired by the Lightning :

Myers, acquired by TB in McDonagh's deal, is a one-time deal. If he is bought out, the Lightning will have a $617,000 credit next season, then owe $633,000 in 2023-24. - Elliotte Friedman"

Basically, if GM Julien BriseBois had decided to buy him out, he would have instantly freed up even more room on his payroll for next year (he was making $617,000). So everyone thought that was his plan, acquiring Myers in July, but ultimately not.
Surprise! Not only did he not buy him out, but he offered him a new deal.
Myers had four points in 27 games last season with the Predators, and it will be interesting to see him play in Tampa.
