Following the announcement of Kirby Dach's long-term absence, there has been a debate in the media about the impact this will have on the team. While he had an excellent start to the season and the future looked very promising, there's no guarantee he would have maintained that pace throughout the season.
It's worth noting that Lavoie mentions at the beginning of his statement that he doesn't want people to think he's downplaying Kirby Dach as a player. He claims he'd want Dach on his team every day of the week, healthy!
The journalist asserts, however, that a fit Monahan is often underestimated. It's been a long time since he's been fit, but when he is, he can be the best player for the Canadiens. Just like he was in October and November of the previous year!
As a reminder, Lavoie's comments were made under the assumption that he had to choose between losing one of Nick Suzuki, Kirby Dach, or Sean Monahan. He never said he wished to see him injured or that he didn't like him! He merely thinks that for the upcoming season, for the team, losing him would be less damaging than losing a Monahan.
And you, if you had the choice, would you pick Dach or Monahan? (we love Monahan too, by the way, but Dach is extraordinary.)
