With the start of the season quickly approaching, it's time for predictions, and just on that subject, NHL prospect expert for The Athletic Scott Wheeler has compiled a list of possible candidates for the 2023 Calder Trophy, an honor given to the season's top rookie.
It's interesting because there are four Montreal Canadiens prospects in the running who make Wheeler's list.
At No. 12 is the first overall pick in the last draft, Juraj Slafkovsky.
Further down the list, the expert mentions backs Justin Barron, Kaiden Guhle and Jordan Harris as possible surprise candidates. (honorable mentions)
Still according to Wheeler, the one who is the favorite to become next season's top rookie is another first overall pick, the Buffalo Sabres' Owen Power in 2021.
Matthew Beniers of the Seattle Kraken and Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks round out the top three, while Shane Wright, the fourth overall pick in the last draft, is ahead of Slafkovsky at No. 10.
