With the acquisition of Justin Barron and the very likely arrival of Jordan Harris, the Habs' defense will look very different for the next few years. In fact, we can even think about next season, if we consider that the chances of seeing Jeff Petry leave are very good.
During his appearance on 91.9 Sports, La Presse journalist Mathias Brunet had a discussion with host Martin Lemay on the future of the Habs' defense and we must say that it is very promising.
But where it starts to get interesting is when Brunet made a prediction about the possible arrival of Kristopher Letang with the Habs. And let's just say it's very positive.
I think it's safe to say that with Petry, they're going to do everything they can to make sure he's around more and I'd be surprised if Kris Letang wasn't playing with the Habs. I'm not saying it's my decision, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't join the Habs this summer. He hasn't signed with Pittsburgh yet, he could have. Me, I think he's coming to Montreal and it's a personal feeling." - Mathias Brunet
It's still big when an excellent journalist is at the point of saying: I'd be surprised if Kris Letang isn't with the Habs next year.
The Penguins defenseman will be a UFA at the end of the season and since his former agent is Kent Hughes, his name is increasingly associated with the Habs.
Last I heard, Letang was looking for a long-term deal for a salary of 7 million per season. However, the Penguins might not be able to meet his salary demands because they have to negotiate new deals with forwards Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust.
Could this open the door for Letang to sign a contract with the Habs?
It's possible, but I'd like to point out that Brunet talked about a feeling issue regarding the Quebec defenseman. But you have to admit that the possibility of seeing him wear a CH uniform is already making many fans dream.
