Nick Foligno arrived in Toronto on April 11 to bring a dose of character, leadership and experience to the Maple Leafs. His work ethic, great attitude and leadership are recognized throughout the National Hockey League. In short, Kyle Dubas made a genius move with this famous transaction involving three teams.

However, things didn't turn out as planned for Foligno, Dubas and the Toronto Maple Leafs. After collecting four assists in seven regular games with the Leafs, he played only four playoff games against the Habs in which he collected only one minor assist. He missed three games in total after the first two games with a debilitating back injury.
Like Shea Weber or Carey Price, Foligno played when many players probably wouldn't have. His condition did not allow him to play his usual style of play. He was not able to be the player he usually is, which may have left some fans wanting more. However, they should know how much the former Blue Jackets captain was suffering.
"I had a very severe back injury that was debilitating. There was nerve pain that went down my entire right leg. It's really disappointing that it happened at that particular time. All the other injuries, you can play through. This one, I couldn't. I tried and I just couldn't be the player I am. I like to hit, put the check swing in and do the things necessary to win the tougher parts of games. It bothered me a lot because I knew I could give more, but I just couldn't physically." - Foligno
Personally, Foligno is the type of player I admire and love to watch. It connects with me in that snarky, intense, physical way. Not to mention, I'm a fan of leadership. Good job, Nick!
