In the last few minutes, an "official account" of Connor McDavid posted this and it caused a thunderous reaction on social networks.

"I have officially been traded to the New York Islanders, but I will always be grateful for my time in Edmonton and the support I have received over the years."

Hoaxes like these are something you see every day on social media. Why is this one getting attention?

Because it comes from an "official" account with a famous blue check mark

"Hello elonmusk, you have a problem with your "verified" system. This is a nightmare." - NHL Informant Frank Seravalli

With Twitter's new philosophy, it's now very easy to get the famous blue check mark (it costs 8$ a month), and we're likely to see this kind of hoax circulating more and more, unfortunately.

You'll have to be very careful. It's embarrassing honestly and it's sad because looking at the comments underneath the post, there are actually a lot of fans who believe it and think that Connor McDavid is now a New York Islanders player.
