According to RDS reporter François Gagnon, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes came close to acquiring a defenseman this week.
As reported by our colleague Wilson Salaun, Hughes is said to have indeed seriously considered claiming defenseman Mike Reilly, who was placed on waivers earlier this week by the Boston Bruins.
According to Francois Gagnon, the club explored this option at length, but at the time of making the final decision, Hughes and Jeff Gorton did not think Matheson would be out for two months.
Otherwise, the Habs would have most likely taken advantage of their waivers priority to get their hands on Reilly.
Now that it's settled, and now that they know more about Matheson's injury, will Hughes try to go back to the drawing board to acquire Reilly for future considerations? To be continued.
