Hughes would have the unexpected opportunity to fix the mistake made with the departure of Phillip Danault

One of the current debates among the Montreal Canadiens is the future of forward Sean Monahan.

He will be an uncompensated free agent next summer, and Kent Hughes is expected to make a decision quickly.

The Habs' GM has two choices:

1- Sign Monahan to a contract extension

2- Trade Monahan before the trade deadline.

The option of letting him go at the end of the season, without receiving anything in return, clearly doesn't seem to be on Kent Hughes' radar.

On that note, see an interesting argument to consider:

"The same people who complain that Bergevin should have given Danault his 6-year, $33M contract ($5.5MAAV) are the ones who want to trade Monahan, not give him that contract.

Danault was 28 when he signed that contract, Monahan is 28!

And in my own book, Monahan is better than Danault!" - MathieuMMtl

That's an interesting point. Do you feel the same way? Do you think Kent Hughes could fix the mistake made with the departure of Phillip Danault, by signing Monahan?

Monahan currently has 16 points in 24 games.
Danault currently has 19 points in 27 games.

It's true that Monahan could bring an interesting stability in the long term and he absolutely has the potential to be the kind of player that Phil Danault is.

To be continued.
