As we reported in the last few minutes, the Washington Capitals organization announced that star player Alex Ovechkin had to leave the team for personal reasons.
"Washington Capitals Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian MacLellan has announced that captain Alex Ovechkin will be absent from the team to attend to a family matter and the health of a loved one."
- Capitals
We had no idea how long he would be out.
News
We suspected he would miss tonight's game and Thursday's game, but Caps head coach Peter Laviolette just announced this:
"We expect Ovechkin to be out for a while, and we don't expect to see him back in a week minimum."
- Laviolette
A Washington executive called it an absence for the "foreseeable future", so they don't expect to see him back in the short/medium term.
So he will miss the "Stadium Series" game against the Carolina Hurricanes, an event he really didn't want to miss.
His teammate T.J. Oshie even revealed that Ovechkin went to talk to the players this morning to explain the situation. It sounds pretty serious.
In any case, we just wish him well, for him and for his loved ones. That's the most important thing.
"Oshie said Ovechkin came in this morning to address the team. He gave the Capitals players a chance to wish him well in person and give him a hug rather than just sending a text message.
"I hope O knows how much he means to us."
This is certainly disturbing information, especially since the players were very emotional this morning in Washington, but let's stay positive.
