We have just witnessed a dramatic turn of events in Colorado:
"The Avalanche just named Chris MacFarland as general manager, while Joe Sakic will become president of field hockey operations. The Avalanche chose to keep MacFarland rather than allow him to interview with other teams earlier this season. (Now we know why)" - Elliotte Friedman
This is quite a surprise, one we didn't see coming, but it is indeed confirmed. Sakic ironically just won the Jim Gregory Trophy, given to the NHL's GM of the Year, and now he's giving up his job.
It's a surprising decision, but it says a lot about Sakic's attitude. He's going to stay in Colorado, as president of field hockey operations.
You can clearly see that he's a team guy.
One thing is for sure, he will have been a great general manager for the Avalanche, who built an absolutely dominant team (a Stanley Cup winning team, but more importantly, a team that could definitely win several championships in the next few years)
Hats off to Joe! More details to follow!
He was in office since May 10, 2013.
"Joe Sakic is no longer the Avalanche's general manager. He now holds the position of president of field hockey operations." - Renaud Lavoie
