Expectations were extremely high for Cole Caufield this season. After a remarkable run in the playoffs last summer, many saw the small forward among the favourites for the Calder Trophy.

However, things did not go as planned in his case. The 21-year-old forward has only one goal and seven assists in 29 games with Montreal.

Caufield even made a short stint of six games with the Laval Rocket in the American Hockey League in order to restore his confidence. However, the Habs had no choice but to call him back because of the large number of injuries.

While Caufield missed the final parts of his team due to a positive covid-19 test, he and Joel Armia can now return to the team circle.

However, it would be surprising to see them in action on Friday and even Saturday night when their plane has been delayed many times. As the Canadiens begin an eight-day break on Sunday, would it be beneficial to send Caufield to Laval?

It must be said that during his most recent visit to Laval, Caufield was beginning to regain his confidence, having collected five points in six games.

Questioned about this, CH coach Dominique Ducharme did not rule out this option, but he mentioned that he will have to discuss it with Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes.

It is clear that Caufield no longer has the confidence he had several months ago, and the solution probably lies with Laval.

It will therefore be interesting to see how the new management will approach the case of the former 15th choice in 2019, which, let's face it, is full of talent.
