As many observers have noted, including Jeff Drouin (Fanadiens.com), defenseman Chris Wideman stood out last night and for excellent reasons.
It's been a bit of a silent one, but we wanted to highlight his work, especially since Carey Price returned to the game.
Wideman has shown over the last few weeks that he is a great teammate and a positive leader in the dressing room.
Yesterday, as you know, for the second game this year, Carey Price was in net and he wasn't bothered too much by his opponents, especially towards the end of the game and there seems to be an obvious reason for that: Chris Wideman wasn't going to let that happen.
He made a big move for his number 1 goalie by clearly passing the message to the Wild. You don't touch #31, and he was constantly making his presence felt in front of his goalie.
"Chris Wideman, 5'10, 180lb, is always in the post-whistle scrimmage, no matter who is on the other side."
Watching yesterday's game, Wideman is constantly "in the pants of opposing forwards" and that's whenever Carey was tying up the puck.
He didn't hesitate to shove players who ventured into Price's half-circle and he cleaned up. He also made those who were too aggressive with his goalie pay.
See here an example (you can even see his teammates following him):
His warnings were clear:
"Chris Wideman let the Wild's Chaffee know, once again, that he would not tolerate any player who got too close to Price's half circle."
Clearly, he is working the right way to fall into the good graces of Carey Price. The latter just reacted in a press briefing and had good words to say about Wideman.
Would you like him to be back next season?
