Horrible news has come to shake the family of former Canadians player Ryan White. His three-year-old son, Gordie Joseph Ryan White, was recently diagnosed with very aggressive and difficult-to-treat brain cancer.
Following this news, a GoFundMe has been set up to support the former National Hockey League forward. Here is what the family wrote on their page:
«It is with incredibly sad hearts that we announce that on Friday, February 18, 2022, Ryan and Sarah White received the heartbreaking news that their firstborn, Gordie Joseph Ryan White, was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor, DIPG.
DIPG is an aggressive form of brain cancer, most commonly found in children between the ages of 7 and 10. It has a 0% survival rate.
Gordie is not only the light of life for his parents, his sister Molly and her family, but he leaves a significant impact on everyone he meets. He is a happy, loving, comical, witty and charming little boy.
He has undoubtedly left a beautiful mark on his world in the short three and a half years he has been with us, and he will continue for his remaining months and forever after. Sarah, Ryan and their families are dedicated to making every day count and will ensure that Gordie continues to live an extremely happy and full life for as long as he can.
In order to help Gordie buy some more time with all of us, he is preparing to start six weeks of radiation therapy. We've set up this Go Fund Me to support Sarah and Ryan and hopefully relieve some of the stress they're under.
Their families thank you for all your love and support. We ask that you respect their privacy at this time."
As horrific as this news is, I'm happy to report that the hockey community has once again shown its true colors with a huge outpouring of support for the White family, with several current and former NHL stars who have generously contributed to the fund.
Here are some examples of the overwhelming support:
Carey and Angela Price donated $5,000.
Benoît Pouliot donated $5,000.
Jared and Danielle Spurgeon donated $2,750.
Marco Scandella donated $1,000.
Katrina and Brett Connolly donated $1,000.
Shayne and Gina Gostisbehere donated $1,000.
Jacob Markstrom donated $1,000.
Kelsey and Brayden Schenn donated $1,000.
Maggie (Josh) Gorges donated $1,000.
Laurence and Sean Couturier donated $1,000.
Gerry Johansson donated $1,000.
Joel Edmundson donated $1,000.
Nolan Patrick donated $500.
Nearly 700 people took out the checkbook to support the White family. As of this writing, the goal of raising $60,000 has been shattered by donations piling up and currently the GoFundMe has reached an incredible $125,257 despite being created only a few days ago.
That being said, while money is undoubtedly much appreciated, I suspect the last thing these parents are concerned about is their finances right now. All of their thoughts are probably on their beautiful baby boy.
