As you may know, Nathan MacKinnon surprised many fans last summer when he said he was willing to take a "bargain" contract to stay with the Colorado Avalanche and allow them to go out and get more good players and win a championship.
Since the Avalanche's recent Stanley Cup win, MacKinnon seems to have completely changed his tune, and he appears to be on his way to signing the most lucrative contract in NHL history (something he deserves).
On that subject, journalist Adrian Dater, who covers the Avalanche closely, threw out a number and it's huge.
"My prediction of the annual value of Nathan MacKinnon's next contract: $14.5 million"
Wow! He adds that it would obviously be a contract of up to eight years.
So that would make it an eight-year contract with an annual value of $14.5 million for MacKinnon, for a grand total of $116 million.
This would be the highest paying eight-year contract in NHL history, ahead of a certain Connor McDavid (8 years / $100 million).
MacKinnon, 27, had 88 points in 65 games last season, 65 points in 48 games in 2020-2021 and 93 points in 69 games in 2019-2020.
He led his team to the Stanley Cup in the spring of 2022 with 24 points and 13 goals in 20 games during the most recent playoffs.
Do you think he deserves that much?
