A very surprising rumor has just surfaced involving forward Jonathan Drouin and the Montreal Canadiens.

As reported by the Info LNH website, journalist Jeremy Tingly is reporting that the Canadiens have just been linked to the Quebec native Drouin.
"The Montreal Canadiens are looking to add more talent to their lineup, especially on offense, and a source has linked them to a possible reunion with a former first-round pick Jonathan Drouin."

In fact, three teams have been linked to Drouin: the Montreal Canadiens, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Los Angeles Kings.
"A return to Montreal for Drouin would be quite the story, and he would fit perfectly as a veteran winger who could help boost the team's offense."

I'd be very surprised if this actually happens, but it's definitely interesting to see it's being talked about - at the very least - and circulating in the rumor mill.

Jonathan Drouin Returning to Montreal - But at What Cost?

It's worth noting that the main reason he's likely to leave Colorado this summer is due to the Avalanche's serious salary cap issues, especially now that Gabriel Landeskog will no longer be on long-term injured reserve.
The Avalanche love Drouin, but his strong performance in recent seasons means his next contract will likely be too expensive for them.
The excellent Frank Seravalli projects a 4 year deal with an annual value of 5.9 million for Drouin - very reasonable for a forward producing at a 71-point pace over 82 games.
Jonathan Drouin, now 30 years old, recorded 37 points in 43 games this season and 56 points in 79 games last year with the Avalanche.
In his last season with Montreal, he posted 29 points in 58 games - but it's clear he's no longer the same player who left the Canadiens in 2023.
He's a better version of himself now, without a doubt.
