Trade Reportedly in the Works Between Canadiens and Golden Knights Involving a Defenseman
I believe this is the most concrete and advanced information we've had so far regarding a potential trade involving Kent Hughes in this summer of 2025, and here's what he reported:
Nick Kypreos: "The Canadiens and Penguins are trying to acquire Vegas defenseman Nic Hague" - Toronto Star
So we learn here that the Canadiens are currently trying to acquire defenseman
Nicolas Hague!
This will be a big storyline to follow in the coming hours, especially knowing that Vegas is looking to move him quickly.. in order to free up some cap space.
It's already known that Nicolas Hague will almost certainly be traded this summer (99% chance), and it looks like it could be to Montreal or Pittsburgh.
Intense negotiations underway for a trade involving defenseman Nic Hague: the Montreal Canadiens among the finalists
At 26 years old, Nic Hague is a big left-shot defenseman, standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 245 pounds. He has collected 83 points in 364 career NHL games, including 12 points in 68 games this season.
As Marc-Olivier Beaudoin rightly points out, Hague is a lefty, but he's absolutely capable of playing on the right side when needed.
To add size and physicality to the Canadiens' lineup, let's just say Kent Hughes would be hard-pressed to find better.
This is definitely something to watch, but if it does go through, don't expect the Habs to have to pay a steep price.
Hague will be a restricted free agent (RFA) this summer.
Do you think this would be a good acquisition for the Canadiens and for their third defensive pairing?
