One of the players who will certainly change teams by the draft is undoubtedly Martin Necas.

His name has been in the rumors for a while, and it was enough for the Montreal Canadiens to be linked to the Carolina Hurricanes forward.

A few days ago, Pierre LeBrun confirmed that the Canadiens had indeed contacted the Hurricanes about Necas.

This has been confirmed.

The hockey insider now adds more details, stating that, according to his information, Kent Hughes is competing with 5 to 7 teams to acquire the Czech player.

It's a race between 7 teams for Martin Necas, including Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens!

Among the known teams, LeBrun mentioned the Montreal Canadiens, the Winnipeg Jets, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Calgary Flames, and the Boston Bruins.

But what price will the Canadiens have to pay?

While nothing has been officially released regarding the price to acquire Necas, many speculations are circulating. Most of them have one common point: Mike Matheson.

Without saying that the requested player was indeed the veteran Canadiens defenseman, the excellent Arpon Basu recently suggested that he would be the type of player the Hurricanes need.

«Who is considered a star player by the Hurricanes? It's subjective and up to them, but for the Montreal Canadiens, it points to a player like Mike Matheson, who would certainly help the Hurricanes a lot.

They have several free agents on defense.» - Arpon Basu

Marc-Olivier Beaudoin, known on the platform X for his hockey analysis, also made an intriguing proposal. He suggests trading Matheson along with the 26th overall pick (Winnipeg Jets' 1st round pick) in return for the rights to Martin Necas.

Is this a fair price or too high for a young player who had a tough season statistically in 2023-2024?

Major obstacle could stop a potential trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes

Given the strained relations between the two teams following the offer sheets made to Sebastian Aho and Jesperi Kotkaniemi, it would be surprising if a trade occurred unless it's above the expected price for the Canes. This would be surprising knowing Kent Hughes' temperament, who is not known for overpaying.

Martin Necas, 25, scored 53 points in 77 games this season and 71 points in 82 games last season.

Mike Matheson, 30, scored 62 points in 82 games this season and 34 points in 48 games last season.

Could their history with Aho and KK affect a potential trade between the two teams for Necas this time? To be continued..
