Kent Hughes is currently working on a very interesting trade, according to NHL sources
Even though it has been a relatively quiet summer for Kent Hughes in terms of new acquisitions, it doesn't mean he's not looking to improve his team.
As reported by the site Marqueur, it seems that a trade might be in the works according to a well-connected source.
Marco D'Amico recently revealed via his X account that Kent Hughes is currently very active in trying to make the most of the available cap space for the Canadiens.
Kent Hughes is active on the trade market with a specific goal in mind
Here are his exact words.
«The Canadiens have finished signing their free agents, but according to sources, they are still looking to maximize their cap space.»
At present, the team has $5.45 million in cap space, and if Carey Price's salary is removed once he is placed on the long-term injured reserve list, we're now talking about a substantial amount of nearly $16 million in available funds.
According to more reliable sources from D'Amico, it seems that Geoff Molson intends to spend this money for the upcoming season.
«Montreal is in a rather enviable position, with its owner willing to spend up to the salary cap, even exceeding it if necessary.
They may have $5.5 million in reserve or whatever that amount is, but being able to use Price's contract to give them an additional $10.5 million opens up a world of possibilities.»
This is quite an interesting scenario for the Canadiens, as we know that Kent Hughes is not afraid to use this strategy, as was the case in the summer of 2022 with the acquisition of Sean Monahan.
Among the names mentioned in D'Amico's article are Patrik Laine, Trevor Zegras, two names that have been frequently discussed this summer as well as Nikolaj Ehlers. It seems that the Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders might need to shed some big salaries.
It will be interesting to see if the Canadiens' general manager will be active before the opening of training camp in September.
