Several months ago, the excellent Marco Normandin (HABSolumentFan) reported that the Anaheim Ducks had a deal in place with the Montreal Canadiens for a trade involving Logan Mailloux and the 21st overall pick, who became Michael Hage, in exchange for Trevor Zegras and a second-round draft pick.
Normandin reported this in early August, imagine that, but a Radio-Canada journalist (Alexandre Gascon) confirmed the information yesterday, so it's now everywhere.
Everyone has focused on the Trevor Zegras aspect, but what stands out to me is that Kent Hughes was literally about to trade Logan Mailloux to acquire a top-six forward.
So, will he attempt this again this summer?
It's definitely possible!
In short, as Gascon also confirmed, Kent Hughes was afraid he wouldn't be able to draft Ivan Demidov (if he was taken before the Canadiens' pick), and he really wanted to add a dynamic offensive talent.
So, if he had missed out on Demidov, he would have pivoted to Zegras and accepted the Ducks' offer.
On the Tellement Hockey podcast, Radio-Canada Sports journalist Alexandre Gascon confirmed that the Canadiens had a trade offer on the table involving Zegras and Mailloux.
Then, Kent Hughes canceled the trade once he was able to draft Ivan Demidov.
This also confirms Maxime Truman's report that Mailloux could be used in a trade to acquire a solid forward.
Things are likely to shake up this summer!
It's also worth noting that the Canadiens received another trade offer involving Logan Mailloux at the last trade deadline. Kent Hughes attempted "certain things," but this case is less clear.
In any case, expect the Canadiens to make moves this summer, and don't be surprised if Logan Mailloux finds a new home for good.
