In his most recent column on BPM Sports, the excellent journalist Arpon Basu himself brought up the name Kent Johnson for a potential trade involving the Montreal Canadiens.
We know that Kent Hughes wants to add a young top-6 forward, and we know that Johnson's name has been circulating in the trade market in recent weeks, and now Basu has linked the two.
After obviously discussing the Zegras and Necas situations, Arpon Basu mentioned this:
And he seems to think that the price to acquire Johnson would be more affordable than acquiring Trevor Zegras or Martin Necas. Interesting.
Kent Johnson, 21 years old, 5th overall pick in 2021, has accumulated 59 points in 130 NHL games in his career, but it simply doesn't seem to be working for him with Pascal Vincent and the Columbus Blue Jackets. (16 points in 42 games this season)
He added a very solid 15 points in 10 games in the American Hockey League.
Yes, he is also extremely talented:
The new GM of the Blue Jackets, Don Waddell, is not the one who drafted Johnson, so he certainly has a lesser sense of attachment to him.
