A new major trade possibility has just emerged for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, this time involving the New Jersey Devils.

After his famous proposal involving Cole Caufield and the 6th overall pick from Utah, journalist Mathias Brunet has made another suggestion on BPM Sports.

A trade between Kent Hughes and the New Jersey Devils, involving Mike Matheson and the 10th overall pick?

We have just learned that the Devils' first-round pick, the 10th overall pick, is indeed available on the trade market. This is big.
Knowing this, Mathias Brunet made a new proposal on BPM Sports.
«Mike Matheson, for the 10th overall pick Would you consider it, if you were Kent Hughes?

Mathias Brunet seems interested in making such a trade:

If they (Devils) offer you the 10th, yes. I think I lean towards that, yes. – Mathias Brunet

The journalist explains that it's something to consider because Matheson is performing beyond expectations, and the Canadiens can take advantage of it to maximize the defenseman's value.» - Via Marc-Olivier Cook, DLC

Do you like the idea?
Let's remember that he is a player Kent Hughes acquired in the Jeff Perry trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins, what an incredible transaction!
That said, there are advantages and disadvantages.
Firstly, Matheson is an excellent established veteran, a safe value who brings so much to the organization, and above all, he is a dominant defenseman who loves Montreal.
We have all the reasons in the world to want to keep him.
On the other hand, his departure would allow Martin St-Louis to give the reins of the power play to Lane Hutson and/or Logan Mailloux, which could be interesting for their development.
But most importantly, Matheson's departure in these circumstances would allow the Canadiens to draft 5th overall, 10th overall, and 26th overall in the 2024 draft.
This would obviously be major for the rebuild, and we could hope to draft Ivan Demidov AND Tij Iginla, for example. It's definitely something to consider.
And you, would you trade Mike Matheson for the 10th overall pick from the New Jersey Devils?
