Trade offers received by Kent Hughes for Joel Edmundson just revealed
As you know, the NHL trade deadline has passed, and many Montreal Canadiens fans were disappointed with the lack of activity from general manager Kent Hughes.
It's true that Hughes was much less active than last year, but there's a specific reason for that and it explains a lot.
"Why didn't Kent Hughes trade Edmundson?"
That's the question answered by RDS journalist François Gagnon in his latest article.
According to him, "we're talking about fourth and fifth-round picks" for Edmundson. Those were the offers that Hughes received for his veteran defenseman.
Ouch. It's clear that Edmundson's injury played a big role in the drop in his value.
Considering everything he brings as a player and leader on the Habs, it makes perfect sense that Hughes refused to trade him for mid-to-late draft picks.
As my colleague Vincent Fournier points out, we should also remember that Joel Edmundson is still under contract next year.
If he stays healthy, the Habs could receive a much better pick for him at the 2024 trade deadline. In the meantime, he'll continue to help the young players and give the Canadiens a better chance to win games.
Would Kent Hughes have accepted a second-round pick for "Eddy"? That's the question we were asking ourselves, given his injury status, but for fifth or sixth-round picks, the question doesn't even come up. We're keeping him! (And that's what Hughes and Gorton did).
Gagnon even talks about a "postponed transaction" for Edmundson.
"When Kent Hughes assured, on Friday, that the Canadiens would have liked to conclude one or two more transactions, it's clear that he was referring to the anticipated departures of Joel Edmundson and Sean Monahan.
[...] Kent Hughes had to settle for much weaker compensation than the already meager ones associated with their names. We're talking about fourth and fifth-round picks. Far, far away from the initial objectives of the Canadiens' management."
François Gagnon, RDS So that explains it.
