Trade cancelled at the last second by Gary Bettman and the NHL: a new twist confirms that Tony DeAngelo will finally be traded
Over the last few days, as we reported, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman used his veto power to cancel a major transaction that was concluded between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Carolina Hurricanes.
"The NHL stepped in to prevent DeAngelo from returning to Carolina because they believe the Hurricanes are trying to circumvent the league's salary cap rules.
The NHL disputed the fact that DeAngelo was traded within the year following the original trade, with a salary retention on top of it. The Flyers and the Hurricanes argue that this doesn't matter because the contract was signed by Philadelphia."
In the end, all signs indicate that the trade will take place and will be announced in a few days. See the new development:
"Tony DeAngelo will still be traded to Carolina.
Don Waddell confirmed that an agreement remains in place with Daniel Brière and must wait until after July 7.
The Flyers would receive a prospect and retain 50% of DeAngelo's salary."
So expect this trade to be announced and finalized over the weekend. A special case to say the least.
DeAngelo, 27, amassed 42 points in 70 games last season, and 51 points in 64 matches in his most recent season with the Carolina Hurricanes.
