In the last few minutes, the Laval Rocket announced cuts, and there's a big surprise.

Young Ty Smilanic, acquired from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade concluded with the Florida Panthers in 2022, has already been cut.
So, it would already be over for him with the CH. What a turn of events for him.
Cut from the Rocket's camp, Ty Smilanic currently has nothing in front of him. He's free as a bird. He could sign with another AHL team, or sign a two-way contract with the Rocket and the Lions."
Anthony Marcotte

Smilanic took the gamble of not returning to the NCAA and trying his luck with the professionals, but his bet clearly did not pay off.
A reminder of the full trade in which he was acquired.
To the Panthers: Ben Chiarot

To the Habs: 2023 1st round pick (included in the Alex Newhook transaction), 2022 4th round pick, prospect Ty Smilanic

We suspected that Smilanic wouldn't make the CH roster, but seeing him cut so quickly from the Laval Rocket, ouch.
It's really a shame for the young man. He's only 21 years old, and he could have easily returned to university, to the NCAA, and remained a Montreal Canadiens prospect.
After collecting 21 points in 29 games at just 18 years of age, in the NCAA, he seemed destined for a bright future. Moreover, Kent Hughes knows him well.
It's up to him to bounce back! We wish him well!
Here are the announcements.
