A big steal by Kent Hughes and a D-man traded for three picks including a first rounder? This is what Pagnotta suggests for David Savard

As the NHL trade deadline approaches and the Montreal Canadiens are once again in the sellers' category, names like Sean Monahan, Tanner Pearson, Jake Allen, and David Savard are increasingly circulating in rumors.

Speaking on TSN 690 yesterday morning, insider David Pagnotta revealed the following regarding the surprising trade value of Savard.

«For my part, my curiosity leans more towards a guy like David Savard who has an additional year on his contract. Some teams are more interested in acquiring a player who is not necessarily at the end of their contract and is just a rental player, but who has an extra year on their contract.

There's a bit more control, more stability in the acquisition and for some of these teams, they feel they can go a long way this season, but also next year.» - David Pagnotta

This is an element that significantly increases his trade value.

Pagnotta goes further!

«I think that's where a guy like David Savard can come into play with so many teams looking to recruit more defensive guys who have the presence of a veteran on and off the ice.

I think we're going to start hearing more about David Savard as the season progresses, and much less about Mike Matheson. I wouldn't be surprised if the Montreal Canadiens get a return similar to what they received for Ben Chiarot a few seasons ago if they decide to trade.» - David Pagnotta

Wow, a return similar to Ben Chiarot! Very interesting.

Remember, Kent Hughes received a first-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and prospect Ty Smilanic, who was drafted in the third round, for Ben Chariot.

If Hughes can pull off the same feat, even though we love Savard, it will certainly be something to consider.

And you, would you trade Savard for three draft picks, including a first-round pick?
