New Odds Prove Auston Matthews Is Falling Off Quicker Than Ever
Auston Matthews had a rough season and betting odds are reflecting how he is no longer a top-five player in the NHL.
New Betting Odds Reflect Poorly On Matthews
Auston Matthews has been on a downward trajectory for just over a year now. After winning the Hart trophy in 2022, Matthews fell off a scoring cliff posting 21 fewer points in 1 more game. In addition to this, he saw 20 of those 21 fewer points come as goals regressing from 60 goals to only 40.
Recently, sportsbooks have been posting their Hart Trophy odds.
Speaking of McDavid and Matthews, the betting odds for the 2023-24 Hart Memorial Trophy were just released. McDavid is the favourite with odds at +100, followed by David Pastrnak, Matthew Tkachuk, Leon Draisaitl, and Nathan MacKinnon, all with odds at +1000.
Matthews is sixth, with his odds listed at +1200. Maple Leafs fans have to hope their player can beat the odds. With Matthews only at 6th, it seems like more and more people are losing faith in him. McDavid is obviously the favorite and head and shoulders above the rest of the NHL but to have Pastrnak, Tkachuk, Draisaitl, and MacKinnon all over Matthews must mean that something is up.
However, 6th may be too high for Matthews. Looking at last year, he was 17th in the NHL in points per game played behind players like Tim Stutzle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and even his own teammate, Mitch Marner.
If Matthews does not have a massive bounce-back year next year, his 2022 Hart Trophy may have just been a flash in the pan and he was never the savior the Leafs thought they had.
